It can be very daunting to buy a silver or gold chain for somebody as a gift either for Valentines, a birthday, or some other special occasion. Whilst many people notice what style of clothes suits another, it is sometimes difficult to tell whether or not a particular necklace or chain will suit somebody, and there is nothing worse than shelling out for a gold necklace only to find out that it 'doesn't go' with any of her clothes, or its the 'wrong colour' of gold. A good start would be to read through our guides to different necklace types so that you can familiarise yourself with the subtle differences between the different chains we sell. You might also wish to read through some of the articles about the size of necklace, and our colour chart guide.
As a brief overview, however, there are some very simple rules which you can follow. Firstly we would advise you to buy something which is in your budget and which you are happy with. If you are buying a necklace for a loved one, then you are clearly very close and correspondingly what you think will look good on her, probably will look good on her as you will no doubt have picked up, albeit subconsciously, on what her style is from the time you have spent with her.
This may, however, lead you to buying a chain or a necklace which is very similar in style or design to one which she already wears, and there is simply no point in buying something which won't be worn because it is too similar to one she already has.
Choose a design which you think will suit her, if she wears pendants on necklaces then why not read our article on which chains are best for wearing pendants. If she likes wearing a chain just on its own, try to think of when she wears necklaces (eg formal occasions/out with mates etc) and the type of clothes she wears (does she like to wear clothes with a higher neckline, in which case a shorter – maybe 16” or 18” chain might be best, or a short box necklace; does she like wearing clothes with a low neckline – maybe a longer belcher necklace or curb necklace might emphasize her curves more).
Does she normally wear simple jewellery, or complicated jewellery? Some of our necklace designs, for example the Prince of Wales chains or Figaro chains, are more intricate than others and would suit somebody who normally wears more complicated jewellery. If she prefers simpler, plain jewellery, then box, belcher and curb necklaces might suit her more.
Does she normally wear silver necklaces or gold necklaces? If you want to buy her a gold necklace, but you are worried that she never normally wears gold and it might not suit her (maybe she has a really pale complexion) then you could consider white gold. You can read more about white gold necklaces in our white gold chains section. Similarly, rose gold has a beautiful subtlety to it and looks fabulous on girls with a paler complexion, or girls who prefer not to wear too much foundation or make up.
Remember, if you are nervous about buying a chain or a necklace as a gift, you will be able to return the item for a replacement or a refund within 21 days.
